I went into Crystal Lake with low expectations and came out of it pleasantly surprised. That's not a setup for a rave review, just the honest situation. I didn't need a backstory for Pamela Voorhees. I didn't need an explanation for Jason. The original Friday the 13th works partly because it doesn't over-explain anything. So the question going in was whether this show could justify its own existence, or whether it would just sand down the mystery that made the source material stick.
The first season mostly justifies it. The show follows a younger Pamela Vorhees at Camp Crystal Lake before everything goes wrong. It fills in her history, her relationships, the circumstances around Jason, and the early doom setting into the camp itself. Some of that backstory works and some of it I could have done without. The explanation for how Jason becomes what he becomes is the part I liked least. That's the kind of thing that works better as a gap. Once you fill it in, you can't unfill it.
What keeps the season going is Linda Cardellini. She plays Pamela Vorhees with a real edge, something brittle underneath the surface that makes you understand, without the show having to spell it out, how a person gets to where Pamela ends up. She's the reason to watch. The rest of the cast is fine, the pacing is decent, and the show has enough restraint that it doesn't feel like a theme park ride through franchise lore.
If you have zero attachment to Friday the 13th, I'm not sure this pulls you in on its own. But if you grew up with those movies and you're curious where this goes, the first season respects your time.
Recommended.
